Wilder Field Guide

A regional nature series needed covers as adventurous as its readers — collectible, tactile, and unmistakable on a crowded shelf.

Letterpress print studio where the Wilder Field Guide covers were proofed

Overview

Wilder publishes pocket guides to the trails, tides, and wildlife of the Gulf Coast. I designed the cover system for its first six volumes: a consistent grid and type voice, with illustration palettes that shift from pine green to tidal teal to sunset ember per region.

Uncoated stock, a debossed compass mark, and a spine system that forms a continuous landscape when shelved in order reward collectors and browsers alike.

The challenge

Each volume had to stand alone in a gift shop and belong together on a shelf — while staying legible at thumbnail size for online retailers.

The approach

A strict cover architecture (mark, title band, illustration window, footer) with generous freedom inside the illustration itself. We press-tested three stocks and five finishes before committing.

Outcome

  • A collectible series identity across six launch volumes
  • Print specifications any press can reproduce faithfully
  • Template the publisher now extends to new regions alone
